The popular SENECA S500 series of energy meters has been expanded with five new MID-certified models. The new solutions cover both single-phase and three-phase networks, offer direct or current transformer connection, and provide Modbus RTU or Ethernet communication.
The series is complemented by the models S501-45-MOD-MID, S504C6-ETH-MID-N, S504C-80-ETH-MID, S534-6-MOD-MID and S534-100-MOD-MID. Each of them is intended for a different application — from single-phase load metering to three-phase power networks where measurement data must be integrated into an automation or building management system.
Imagine a plant with several workshops and one common electricity input. The main meter shows the total consumption, but it does not reveal which production line consumes the most, where unplanned costs arise, or which machine has started operating inefficiently.
A similar situation occurs in office complexes, commercial buildings and apartment buildings where electricity costs must be distributed among several tenants or users. Without accurate and reliable submetering, it is difficult to prepare justified invoices and prevent disputes about actual consumption.
In energy metering, two interrelated tasks usually need to be solved:
Technical metering — allows analysis of the consumption of a specific device, line or facility, identification of inefficiency and planning of energy-saving measures.
Billing metering — provides verifiable measurement data for cost allocation or invoice preparation.
MID-certified SENECA S500 meters combine both functions. They provide certified measurement accuracy and at the same time allow data to be sent automatically to PLC, SCADA, BMS or another monitoring system.
In a traditional solution, energy measurement and data transmission often require several devices — a meter, a communication module and sometimes a protocol converter or gateway.
Each additional component takes up space in the distribution cabinet, increases installation and configuration time, and creates another possible point of system failure.
In the S500 series, energy measurement and communication are combined in one DIN rail device. Depending on the selected model, data are available via Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP protocol. This simplifies the system architecture and allows the meter to be directly integrated into the automation network.
The new SENECA S500 series models differ in network type, connection, maximum current and communication interface. When selecting the most suitable model, the facility’s power network, load and the way the measurement data will be transferred to the automation or monitoring system must be considered.

The new models expand the selection options of the S500 series with single-phase direct connection up to 45 A, three-phase direct connection up to 100 A, current transformer connection variants and Ethernet models with Modbus TCP communication. This allows the meter to be more precisely adapted to the facility’s power network, load and data transmission infrastructure.
The new S500 models provide measurement of the most important power network and energy parameters, including:
voltage and current;
active and reactive power;
active and reactive energy;
power factor;
energy flow direction.
Two-way energy metering is especially useful in facilities with local electricity generation, such as solar panel systems. In such facilities, energy can flow in both directions depending on the ratio of generation and consumption.
Measurement results can be viewed both on the meter’s LCD display and via the communication interface. This allows the data to be used not only for manual monitoring, but also for automated supervision, trend analysis, reports and alarm generation.
MID, or certification in accordance with the Measuring Instruments Directive, confirms that the meter meets specified metrological accuracy and reliability requirements. The S500 models comply with Directive 2014/32/EU and standard EN 50470-3.
In practice, this means that the meter data can be used not only for energy consumption analysis, but also for billing and cost allocation purposes, in accordance with the requirements applicable to the specific application.
One meter can therefore provide both the information needed by technical personnel and verifiable data for allocating electricity costs among workshops, departments, tenants or other users.
Models with Modbus RTU communication can be configured with the front panel buttons or SENECA E-MODBUS-PACK software.
Ethernet models S504C6-ETH-MID-N and S504C-80-ETH-MID have a built-in web server. This allows measurement data to be viewed in a browser and exported in CSV format without installing additional software.
MID-certified accuracy for technical and billing metering.
Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP communication for direct integration into PLC, SCADA and BMS systems.
Choice of direct or current transformer connection for different loads and power network configurations.
Bidirectional measurement for facilities with solar panels or other local energy sources.
Measurement and data transmission in one device, reducing the number of additional components in the distribution cabinet.
Wide model selection for single-phase and three-phase applications with currents up to 100 A.
The new SENECA S500 series models allow the energy meter to be selected according to the facility’s network, current range and communication infrastructure. They combine certified measurement accuracy, a compact DIN rail design and convenient data integration in one device.
To choose the most suitable model, four main parameters must be considered:
number of phases
maximum current
connection type
required communication interface.
