In industrial equipment, it is important not only to start the motor, but also to stop it safely. Direct motor starting can cause a high inrush current and a sudden mechanical jerk. Meanwhile, a saw, grinder, or other rotating machine can continue moving for quite a long time after being switched off. PETER electronic VersiComb II Safe solves both problems with one device: it provides soft motor starting and controlled braking.
Simply put, VersiComb II Safe is a soft starter with built-in DC braking. It is designed for three-phase asynchronous motors.
During starting, the device gradually increases the motor voltage. The motor starts to rotate more smoothly, current peaks are reduced, and mechanical parts are subjected to less shock. This is especially useful in equipment with belts, gearboxes, saw blades, and other moving parts.
After switching off, DC braking is activated. It helps stop the motor faster without using a mechanical brake. The device also detects when the motor has stopped and monitors the stopping time.
VersiComb II Safe has a built-in bypass relay and braking contactor. After motor start, the bypass relay bypasses the power semiconductors, thereby reducing heat and power losses during normal operation. The device can automatically adapt the starting and braking process to the set time.
The VersiComb II Safe series includes five models with rated current from 12 to 60 A. Below are the most important technical data specified by the manufacturer. When selecting a model, not only the motor power, but also its rated current, starting load, and required braking time must be taken into account.

The device detects when the motor has come to a complete stop, and this information can be transmitted to the machine control system via a relay signal. The signal can also be used in control of the protective door interlock.
However, VersiComb II Safe alone is not enough for the entire machine to become automatically safe. A risk assessment must still be performed and the protective devices, emergency stop, and other safety measures required for the specific machine must be provided.
The motor temperature can be monitored with PTC, KTY84 or PT1000 sensors. The device also monitors its own temperature. If necessary, an external sensor can be connected for speed control of the working instrument. A safety-related fault relay and a general fault relay are provided for fault indication.
The safety functions of VersiComb II Safe comply with category 2 and performance level PL c according to EN ISO 13849-1. Compliance with SIL CL 1 requirements according to EN 62061 and IEC 61508 is also specified.
VersiComb II Safe can be configured with the control panel or CANopen interface. Using CANopen, the control system can read the device parameters and operating status.
Depending on the machine, the start voltage ramp, current limit, and starting boost (boost). This makes it possible to adapt soft starting and braking to the specific motor and load.
This solution is suitable for machines where the motor must be started without a sudden jerk and stopped quickly after shutdown. Typical applications are:
saws and other woodworking machines;
milling and grinding machines;
centrifuges;
vibration and screening machines;
