Solenoid valves

Solenoid valves

Solenoid valves control the flow of liquids, gases and steam in industrial pipelines and process equipment — automatically, without mechanical wear, and with response times as fast as 30 ms. An electromagnetic coil shifts a plunger or diaphragm to open or close the flow path; remove the signal, and the valve returns to its default position — normally closed (NC) or normally open (NO). We stock SMS Tork solenoid valves for water, air, steam, gas, fuel, vacuum and aggressive media applications, with engineering support available from our team in Riga.

Solenoid valves — electromagnetic flow control from SMS Tork, stocked in Riga

A solenoid valve is an electromechanical device that controls fluid, gas or steam flow. When voltage is applied to the coil, an electromagnetic force shifts the internal plunger or diaphragm, opening or closing the flow path. When voltage is removed, the valve returns to its default state — normally closed (NC) or normally open (NO) depending on the design. Response times typically range from 30 to 500 ms depending on orifice size and valve type.

Compared to manually operated or motorised valves, solenoid valves offer faster switching, full automation compatibility, and no wearing mechanical components in the flow path.

  • Protection rating: IP65 standard; IP68 available

How to select the right solenoid valve

Before ordering, confirm:

  • Medium — water, air, steam, gas, oil, fuel, or chemically aggressive fluid

  • Function — NC or NO; 2/2-way or 3/2-way

  • Working pressure and pipe size — in bar and inches or DN

  • Coil voltage and connection type (DIN connector standard)

  • Environment — operating temperature range, required protection class, ATEX if applicable

  • Seal compatibility — NBR for general use, EPDM for hot water/steam, Viton for fuels and solvents

Not sure which series fits your application? Our engineers can cross-reference your process parameters and recommend the correct model before you order.

Typical applications

  • Automated on/off control of water and compressed air supply lines

  • Steam and hot water flow control in heating and process systems

  • Gas flow control and safety shut-off in pipeline systems

  • Dosing and flow control in food, pharmaceutical and chemical processing

  • Fuel management systems and burner control

How does a solenoid valve work?

A solenoid valve uses an electromagnetic coil to move an internal plunger or diaphragm, opening or closing the flow path when voltage is applied. When the signal is removed, the valve returns to its default position — normally closed or normally open — depending on the design

What is the difference between NC and NO solenoid valves?

A normally closed (NC) valve blocks flow when de-energised — the safe default for most shut-off and safety applications, and efficient when the valve is closed more often than open. A normally open (NO) valve allows flow when de-energised, used where an open default state is required by process or safety logic. The correct choice depends on your system's fail-safe requirements.

hich media are compatible with SMS Tork solenoid valves?

The SMS Tork range covers water, air, steam, gas, oil, fuel, vacuum and chemically aggressive fluids. Seal material — NBR, EPDM or Viton — is selected based on the medium's chemical composition and operating temperature. We can confirm compatibility for your specific application.

Are ATEX-certified solenoid valves available?

Yes — the SMS Tork SX series is ATEX certified for Zone 1 and Zone 2 explosive atmosphere applications. Contact our engineers to confirm the correct coil protection level and valve configuration for your installation.
