Mean Well power supplies for stable industrial automation-0

In industrial automation, power is not 'just another component' - it is the foundation the entire system rests on. If the voltage fluctuates, there are short dips, or the power supply overheats and shuts down, the result is often downtime, PLC faults, and frequently even damaged equipment. Mean Well power supplies have become an industry standard over the years. They are designed precisely for such environments - 24/7 operation, demanding conditions, and predictable, stable power delivery.

Why choose Mean Well?

In industry, Mean Well is known for practical attributes appreciated by both engineers and maintenance staff: stable operation, good efficiency, and a wide range of models for different loads and power network configurations.

  • High efficiency → less heat. XDR and XDR-E series reach up to ~96%, which reduces losses and eases thermal management in densely packed panels.
  • Industrial robustness. Many models are designed to operate from −40 °C to +70 °C and above (with power derating at higher temperatures; exact figures — datasheet).
  • Wide power range. From 10 W for small I/O nodes to 960 W for high-power solutions for larger loads.
  • Protection features. Against short circuit, overload, overvoltage, overtemperature, etc. (set depends on the series).
  • Industrial 'extras'. DC OK relay contact for signaling to a PLC or alarm, and for certain models also Modbus for power supply monitoring.
  • Certifications. UL, CE, EAC, CB, UKCA — applicable to global markets.

Key protection features

Mean Well power supplies are equipped with multiple layers of protection that ensure stable operation even when something goes wrong in the mains or the load.

  • Reinforced isolation. Up to 4KVAC I/O isolation in many models — important in environments with noise, large potential differences, or safety requirements (e.g., machinery, medical).
  • Comprehensive protection. Built-in protection against short circuit, overload, overvoltage, overtemperature, input undervoltage, and reverse polarity. In most models the power supply recovers automatically after the fault is cleared.
  • DC OK relay contact. Signals to a PLC or central alarm that the output voltage is within tolerance. Allows quick identification of power issues without additional measurement.
  • Active PFC (Power Factor Correction). Reduces reactive load on the mains and helps meet EMC requirements — especially important in industrial environments with strict power quality standards.
  • Flexible mounting options. The same model is often available in several enclosure variants: DIN rail (DR) for control cabinets, PCB mount (P) inside the equipment, or screw terminals (ST) for stationary installation.

Series overview

Important: The XDR-E series is a next-generation solution that replaces the older SDR, NDR, and EDR series. The XTR series replaces the TDR series in three-phase applications. For new projects, it is recommended to use these newer series.

Typical applications

DIN rail power supplies are the de facto standard in industrial control cabinets — they fit practically any equipment that requires stable DC power. Here is where Mean Well solutions are used most often:

  • Control panels and PLC cabinets. The main application — 24V power for PLCs, HMI screens, relays, and other control electronics. The compact size and narrow DIN profile simplify design even in crowded cabinets.
  • Sensor arrays and I/O modules. Sensors and field devices often require stable, low-noise power — minor voltage disturbances can cause false signals. Mean Well models with low ripple provide a clean output even under varying load.
  • Production lines and conveyor systems. In continuous production environments, the power supply must operate 24/7 without interruption. High MTBF values and a wide temperature range ensure reliability even under intensive use.
  • Motor drives and heavy machinery. Frequency converters and servo drives require power with good dynamic response and high peak power for short-duration load peaks. The NDR, SDR, and XDR series with 150–200% peak power are suitable for these applications.
  • Energy storage systems. In battery charging and UPS systems, precise voltage stability and protection against reverse current are important. Certain Mean Well models offer adjustable output voltage and a built-in battery charging function.
  • Process automation in harsh environments. Chemical industry, food production, and outdoor installations require power supplies that withstand moisture, dust, and temperature fluctuations. Models with protective coating (conformal coating) and a wide operating range are designed specifically for such conditions.
  • Telecommunication and IT infrastructure. In server rooms and telecommunication cabinets, high efficiency (less heat), low noise level, and reliable operation are important. Modbus support in the XDR series allows remote monitoring of the power supply status.

How to choose the right series?

Selecting the right series depends on several factors — from electrical parameters to physical constraints and certification requirements.

These six points will help narrow the selection:

  1. Required output voltage and current — 12V, 24V, 36V or 48V?
  2. Available input voltage at the site — single-phase 230V, two phases 400V or three phases?
  3. Space constraints — how many mm are available on the DIN rail?
  4. Environmental conditions — temperature range, dust, humidity?
  5. Certification requirements — UL, ATEX or other industry requirements?
  6. Special functions — Modbus communication, parallel operation, peak power?

Use the XDR-E (single-phase) or XTR (three-phase) series — best performance, certification, and compact size. For replacement of existing SDR/NDR/EDR/TDR equipment, these series are direct replacements.
