O-Link is an open standard series communication protocol that provides two-way data exchange between sensors or devices with IO-Link support and IO-Link Master. The IO-Link master can transfer these data across networks using a variety of Fieldbus protocols and interfaces, making sensor data available for immediate processing or long-term analysis using industrial information systems (PLC, HMI, SCADA, etc.).
IO-Link sensors become active participants in industrial automation system processes, as senders sensors independently report errors and statuses, while as receivers receive setting and control signals and process them. Each IO-Link sensor has an IODD (IO Device Description) file that describes the device and its IO-Link capabilities.
