Introducing the Invertek Optidrive E4 Variable Frequency Drive-0

Optidrive E4 was presented at the Invertek Drives booth at the SPS 2025 exhibition in Nuremberg as the newest member of the Optidrive E series. It is built on the reliable Optidrive E3 platform, adding extended diagnostics, integrated industrial Ethernet, and advanced safety features while maintaining simple setup and a compact size.

Invertek emphasizes that E4 does not replace E3. It operates alongside as a more powerful option for applications requiring higher safety standards, more detailed process information, and readiness for next-generation high-efficiency motors.

Key Features of Optidrive E4

Safe Torque Off (STO) as Standard
Dual-channel STO complies with SIL 3 / PL e (Cat. 3) requirements and is built-in from the factory. Compared to E3, this is a significant step forward as it enables broader opportunities in civil applications related to lifts and passenger transport. This applies not only to classic passenger lifts and escalators but also to platforms for people with mobility impairments, freight and service lifts, mobile platforms, and food lifts, where safe and certified torque disconnection is especially important.

Integrated Industrial Ethernet
Optidrive E4 supports industrial Ethernet via additional communication cards: available versions include Modbus TCP/IP, EtherCAT, PROFINET, and EtherNet/IP, eliminating the need for expensive, specialized gateway solutions. This gives OEMs and system integrators the ability to create flexible, Ethernet-based VFD control architectures in various setups, with the new cards positioned as cost-effective (approximately 60–80 EUR).

Built-in Diagnostics and "Flight Recorder"
The E4 continuously monitors key operating parameters and logs them in an internal "flight recorder." This facilitates troubleshooting and supports predictive maintenance strategies, helping reduce unplanned downtime.

Modern Service Interfaces: USB-C and Bluetooth®
The USB-C service port provides a universal, mechanically robust connection using widely available cables and tools. The new Bluetooth programmer enables engineers to transfer and clone parameter sets even to an unpowered drive, significantly simplifying pre-configuration in the workshop and on site. Combined with the latest Invertek PC configuration software, it offers a very simple and intuitive setup process.

Digital Product Passport (QR Code)
Each drive has a unique QR code directly linked to its digital passport: configuration data, configuration history, user manuals, and support resources for the specific unit. This improves traceability, documentation consistency, and lifecycle management.

Future-Ready Motor Control
E4 offers sensorless vector control for a wide range of motor technologies: induction (IM), permanent magnet (PM), brushless DC (BLDC), synchronous reluctance (SynRM), line-start PM (LSPM), and permanent magnet assisted reluctance (PMAREL) motors. This enables migration to high-efficiency and hybrid motors without changing the drive platform.

Built-in C1 EMC Filter and Proven Mechanics
The internal C1 electromagnetic interference filter reduces system disturbances and saves costs on external components. The mechanical design and mounting dimensions are essentially identical to E3, facilitating upgrades and standardization of control panels.

Optidrive E4 Benefits

Benefits awaited by system integrators and end users when using the new Optidrive E4.

  • Broader Range of Safety-Critical Applications
The built-in STO simplifies compliance with lift and machine safety standards, especially in passenger transport systems and platforms used by people with mobility impairments, as well as freight and service lifts with personnel nearby.

  • Ethernet-Ready Control Architectures
With Modbus TCP/IP onboard and economical cards for other Ethernet protocols, E4 can connect directly to the factory network. This reduces hardware volume, accelerates integration with PLC and SCADA systems, and allows using the already familiar Ethernet infrastructure.

  • Faster Setup and Parameter Management
USB-C, Bluetooth programmer, and the new PC software facilitate parameter copying, backup, and restoration even before the drive is fully connected and powered on, reducing engineers’ working time on serial projects and service calls.

  • Longer Equipment Uptime and Easier Diagnostics
Built-in diagnostics, status LED indication, and “flight recorder” provide the maintenance team with detailed information on faults and process changes, shortening investigation time.

  • Simple Upgrade Path from E3
The familiar 14-parameter quick setup structure and identical mounting footprint mean existing E3 installations can be relatively easily upgraded to E4 when additional safety, diagnostics, or connectivity is required.
